Marvel’s Phase 2 has been knocking it out of the park with the already released Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World. With each of these new chapters they seem to be doing some new things with the characters and the next entry Captain America: The Winter Soldier looks to keep that trend alive by taking a new direction with the super soldier. This chapter features a great cast including Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Redford, Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, and Maximiliano Hernandez as well as some surprise additions, but will it live up to the hype or could this be Cap’s final mission?
Captain America: The Winter Soldier follows Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and battles a new threat, the Soviet agent known as the Winter Soldier and as if this battle wasn’t already enough he will have to face betrayal from all sides that will change things forever. From the moment this film begins you know you are getting a different kind of not just a Captain America film but a Marvel film as well. There has been a lot of talk about it being more of a spy thriller and they were not lying as this film takes full advantage of the world of S.H.I.E.L.D making for easily one of the best stories in the Marvel universe to date. The story is about so much more than the Winter Soldier who actually plays a big part, but is almost a secondary aspect to the bigger story. They also continued to play up the nature of Rogers still learning about this new world keeping him a bit lost on some aspects, but still sticking by his core values no matter the cost the way the character always did. Johansson is given the most to do As Black Widow than ever before and looks to be having a great time. Her and Evans have great chemistry and their relationship throughout the film helps to elevate it in various ways. Anthony Mackie steps into this already populated world with ease and the way the relationship between Falcon and Cap evolves is perfection leading up to not only the fighting but the long term friendship that is widely known in the comic world. Jackson clearly loves his Fury role and has more to do here than ever before as well and really gets some great moments. One of the best additions is that of Robert Redford as this not only helps to continue to solidify the credibility of these films, but he really jumps into the role and does a great job as expected.
While there is a lot of character building this time around and does play up the espionage aspect have no fear there is plenty of high octane action. This film sports easily some of the best action pieces in any Marvel film to date including The Avengers. It’s not always as big, but the action is a lot more intense and real here. There are people dying and being broken in ways that really takes this film in a new direction. We finally get to see Cap in action doing what he really can do and each fight is so well choreographed and executed that you can feel the intensity. For most of the film they keep it pretty tight on the action with mostly hardcore fight scenes, but the last half of the film takes a more comic direction taking things too a bigger scale that is awesome to watch, just not quite as brilliant as some of the earlier aspects. To talk about action you have to discuss The Winter Soldier who is a total badass. He is handled awesome here allowing the audience to see what he is capable before revealing his identity and the direction of the story. If you are not into the comics and do not already know the identity of The Winter Soldier then avoid the trailers and posters and allow it to unfold on screen. On the flip side, they do such a great job building it up and the big reveal that those that do know will still feel the moment.
As with all Marvel movies there are so many extras tossed in for the hardcore fans and this film is no different. There are some surprise new characters that show up, there are hints at some possible others, twists on existing ones and once again a two after credits snippits with one that will leave hardcore fans giddy with excitement. You never know how each fan will react to each entry into this universe, but this reviewer is going on record to say that Captain America: The Winter Soldier is easily the best Marvel to date and yes that includes The Avengers. It will truly be interesting to see how this will affect Agents of S.H.E.L.D. because there is no way it can’t. There is no doubt that the promotional storm for Guardians of the Galaxy will kick into high gear now, but thankfully this film is so awesome we can check it out numerous times while we wait for its release.
