I do love a good book blurb. When you are excited to read something, the blurb just gives you an extra dose of that excitement as this one did for me. I finally had the chance to pick up my copy of Jennifer A. Nielsen's The Runaway King and I was so excited to read this book (I have been ever since I finished the first one). Jennifer has done it again, her second book is just as good a read as the first and while it is full of familiar characters, it is also full of new adventures. I tried to take my time with this one and read just a few chapters each night, and I succeeded at first with just a few chapters here and there, but by the time I got to the last leg of the book the chapters got so intense I ended up staying up late to finish it. What a rush.
I love all the new characters that she introduces as well as the old ones that show up here and there. I was just as invested in this story as I was in the first, she does such a good job of really getting you into Jaron's mind and making you feel what he feels physically and emotionally (even if it's painful...really really painful...oh you'll see what I mean when you read it). She had a lot of clever little bits in the story too that gave it that extra depth. I also really liked that she showed the pirates while they were at their home base, on solid ground, rather than having them out at sea on their ships where we usually see pirates in books and movies, it was refreshing.
I recommend this just as highly as the first one. It is full of very clever plot points and the usual humor and adventure. Five stars for sure. I have no idea when the last book in the trilogy will be released but I wish it was right now because I am sure it will be just as thrilling and well written as the first two. Please read this book if you get the chance, I promise you won't be sorry.
