WEN creator and celebrity stylist, Chaz Dean, makes a lot of claims about the superior capability of his signature product. But can these claims be substantiated? Is Wen really the life changer (and hair changer for that matter) that it is depicted to be in countless ads and infomercials?
Its prowess will be put to the ultimate test on hair that has a variety of challenges to see if WEN can back up its boasts.
But first what is WEN and what makes it so special?
(SEE INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO)
The video contains a plethora of declarations, but nearly every product on the market these days claims to be healthy, safe and all natural. So again, the question is asked, can WEN really deliver?
The biggest point to mention here is that while WEN has now begun to incorporate more ethnic models/spokes people into its advertisements to boost sales among people of color who may otherwise overlook the product, the reviews on Amazon.com, You Tube and other sources, reveal that African American people are especially skeptic about a product that claims to cleanse hair without the use of tried and true detergent additives like sodium laurel sulfate. Therefore the biggest challenge to prove or debunk the claims…test WEN out on African American hair. BUT not just African American hair, coarse, virgin, ethnic hair that is in need of more than a little moisture.
So the challenge begins…
In all fairness to WEN, one must take into consideration that it is clearly stated in the product attributes that it takes more than one use to see the benefits on WEN. In fact, it is recommended to reserve judgment until the product has been used for 4-6 uses (roughly one week) before the user will see improvements. Given this fact, African Americans and other people of color who do not shampoo as frequently may not see results as quickly. Nonetheless, it is also stated that once you begin to recognize these benefits, improvements will persist with continued use.
Step by step instruction on how to use WEN Cleansing Conditioner courtesy of http://www.wenhaircare.com/howtouse.php
- Rinse hair thoroughly and completely for 1-2 minutes.
- Dispense the proper amount of Cleansing Conditioner into your hands and rub together.
- Work product into the hair, starting at the crown and working towards the ends, massaging vigorously. Apply a splash of water to help distribute the product evenly.
- Really work the Cleansing Conditioner into your hair by pushing it into the hair shaft with your fingers. Remember it won't lather, but it should feel thick, rich and creamy.
- Comb the product through your hair with the Wide Tooth Comb.
6. Leave in for a minimum of 3-5 minutes then rinse thoroughly and completely. Your Cleansing Conditioner should be the first thing on and the last thing you rinse off in your shower routine. Remember the more you use and the longer you leave it on, the better the results. NOTE: The self same product used to cleanse the hair can also be used as a leave in conditioner.
Sounds easy enough, now examine how well it works in real life.
On a trial subject, WEN was used exactly as directed with lack luster results. This was trial number one.
Hair was dry and tough to detangle and there was very little change in the state of its health. It remains to be seen if any improvement at all will take place. The next trial will be in two weeks. Will WEN be able to maintain its claims? The jury is still deliberating. Stay tuned!
