'The Queen is Dead' is a screaming fun read about a goblin detective

Kate Locke's "The Queen is Dead" http://www.amazon.com/The-Queen-Dead-Immortal-Empire/dp/0316196134/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1361651576&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=kate+locke is a bloody good scream of fun set in a monster filled alternative England where Queen Victoria, the ruler of the place is a vampire, the human league is involved in terrorist attacks against the werewolves and a new queen of the goblins is rocking the joint. Its pretty good too. I missed the first book, but just bought it on Amazon and expect to read it shortly. So you have to get the back story while reading this novel.

It seems that Xandy, the newly crowned queen of the goblins, used to be considered a halfie, a half human half goblin, who worked for the Special Branch of Scotland Yard. However, she has now discovered that she is all goblin, and thus unable to serve Special Branch, but unlike most goblins she looks mostly human and can be outside in the sunlight. She can transform into a full goblin and has all of their strength and speed. However, she has developed a taste and need for red meat, preferably bloody and freshly killed.

Although elected queen of the goblins, she is not sure she wants the job, as she is not sure she wants to be all goblin, plus her new role does not sit that great with Queen Victoria, the vampire queen. Her boyfriend Vex is the leader of the werewolves.

But her brother Val, who works for Scotland Yard, has disappeared leaving behind his "rotary". Xandy's sister Avery ask Xandy to find him and we are off and running. Its not too long before Xandy figures out that Val has been kidnapped.

Xandy is no wallflower. She is not afraid to use her fangs or her brains to find her brother. She is a very likeable character, and joined in with a petite transvestite named Penny Dreadful, Vex and the goblin prince, its anyone's guess if she will save Val before he is killed for his blood.

The book is filled with colorful characters, artful dialogue and enough odd characters to make it all worthwhile. I have two days to get the first book in this fast paced series. I cannot wait.
