The legendary group, the Pixies, recently came to Saint Paul for the Doolittle tour - a stop that's been much-anticipated ever since they announced the continuation of the tour in order to visit Canada.
Ever since coming back together in 2004 - their first reunited show was at the Fine Line Music Cafe right here in Minneapolis - it's been a joy to see one of the seminal bands for the sounds of the 1990s through today finally receive the adulation and compensation that they have long deserved.
The tensions that came between Kim Deal and Black Charles, leading to the infamous break up via fax, were still visible on stage, as Kim stood to the side of the stage, with a barrier of equipment almost cordoning her off from the rest of the stage. However, the disconnect ended there. The Pixies still sound just as incredible and focused as ever - and that is a particularly impressive achievement, given that the Roy Wilkins auditorium fairly exudes the ambiance of a high school auditorium.
Of particular note was the videos played behind the band - short films that were created to match their corresponding song. They were almost distracting - sitting up in the balcony, it was all too easy to watch the films and forget that there was an actual live band on stage. However, the Pixies have not lost their magic and the actual show on stage was always able to recapture your attention.
It was a great show - even if the Pixies won't be making any new music too, it is enough to hope that they will keep bringing their show to town.
