TBS is expanding their late night schedule with the new talk show produced by Conan O'Brien starring comedian, Pete Holmes. "The Pete Holmes Show" premieres tonight, October 28th at midnight after "Conan". The half-hour show features a monologue, sketches, remote segments, and guest interviews.
Many of Pete's guests for at least the first couple of weeks are stand-up comedians and friends of his. Whitney Cummings, Anthony Jeselnik, Chelsea Peretti, and his first guest, Kumail Nanjiani, are in that category and among his earliest interviews on the show. Holmes has plenty of experience interviewing comics for his podcast, "You Made it Weird".
Holmes is very likable on the program. A part of his charm comes off as self-deprecating and slightly embarrassed. During the telecasts he sometimes puts his hands up to his face as his he can't believe what was just said. Pete often gets giggly at some of the material, as well. If that seems to bother some of you, remember that Jimmy Fallon got the gig at the host of "The Tonight Show" and no other late night talk show host seems to break up more at the comedy on their own show. Holmes has an appealing awkwardness at his new gig, much like his boss, Conan, when he first started twenty years ago. In the promo for the new show, O'Brien comments on how Holmes's posture looks like "a slowly melting candle." Jeselnik teases Pete's wardrobe in an upcoming episode, saying he dresses like "the CEO of a pumpkin patch. Holmes appears like someone who is self-aware enough to find this all hilarious.
Though some of the sketches, monologues, and interviews can go in a vulgar direction, there is an underlying sweetness about the humor. Holmes ended a show by playing a voicemail from his dad suggesting to him a possible future television show for his son that seems like it might become a running gag. The competition at midnight is very tough, but I would say that if you are a fan of the current wave of comedy podcasters, you may get giggly as well by giving the latest entry into the late night talk show world a try.
