It is Valentine’s Day and Mister Terrific is looking to reunite with a past girlfriend. In DC Comics’ Mister Terrific #6 by Eric Wallace and Oliver Nome, the World’s Third Smartest Man travels to “The Land of Fire and Ice”, Iceland, to see if an old flame can be rekindled or if that fire has been cooled off. The hero who is all about fair play learns that all is fair in love and war.
For a man whose life has been nothing but extraordinary success, Michael Holt, aka Mister Terrific, seems to have nothing but trouble with the women in his life. He has recently broken up with girlfriend Karen Starr, his close confidant and best friend Aleeka has almost given up on him and now the hero of Los Angeles is travelling half a world away to see if a spark can be created with Lilija Eriksdotter. Unfortunately for Mister Terrific’s love life, the only sparks that fly are when the Tomorrow Thief attacks the Icelandic Hnukur Railway.
Over the course of the Mister Terrific series writer Eric Wallace has shown that Mister Terrific is the thinking man’s hero. In Mister Terrific #6, not only does Mister Terrific get to use his tremendous brain but he must take the fight to the Tomorrow Thief in order to stop the villain’s industrial espionage.
Wallace has taken great care in the development of Mister Terrific’s personal life. Despite all of his success in business and science, Mister Terrific does not always seem comfortable in either of these worlds. Dealing with corporate raiders and the affections of women aren’t his forte. They are the sort of problems his science based mind can’t solve.
The artwork of Oliver Nome is full of action with Mister Terrific’s battle against the Tomorrow Thief. With daring martial arts and molecule manipulation powers the Tomorrow Thief jumps off the pages. Nome has his own style with angular figures that create a dynamic look. The action is balanced by the quieter character moments of the story. Nome tells the story of Mister Terrific’s romantic life showing his awkward demeanor and the attraction between him and the women in his life.
The decision: In Mister Terrific #6, Eric Wallace uses the great supporting cast of characters and has each one offer a different perspective on who Mister Terrific is. From the viewpoint of his lovers past and present to his corporate rivals, each one sees Mister Terrific differently. The personal life does not get in the way of his battle with a villain, the Tomorrow Thief, who has powers based on science similar to Mister Terrific. When faced with a villain equal to him Mister Terrific must rise to the threat that will use his brawn as well as his brain.
