From the moment this film started I was pleased to see a new slasher in front of my eyes. In the vein of films like I Know What You Did Last Summer , Early Grave is about a group of friends trying to move on from something that happened one fatal night that changed their lives forever. Early Grave is directed by Kevin DiBacco and is written by Mark Allen. The film stars Kimbette Fenol, Nathaniel Sylva, and Alexander Merrill.
It’s apparent that these old friends want nothing to do with each other especially from the tone of the character Dana played by Yerania Del Orbe. She feels she is beneath hanging out with these people the minute she arrives. All the characters have very different lives since that tragic night being everything from a porn star to a horror novelist. The movie starts off with a very negative tone which works for the first five to ten minutes but starts to become stale as the movie progresses. I’ll be honest the cinematography is not great which will hurt the film for many movie watchers. What will also hurt the film is the delayed killings that when introduced to the film seem lost an uninspiring. I really wanted to see the killer take his time and pick the characters off earlier in the film. I really disliked the time it took to establish the characters as I felt it could have been accomplished a lot earlier in the film. You will hear the word “drag” being used in reviews of Early Grave but I applaud the entire crew for returning to a time when horror was simple and straightforward. Nowadays there are too many horror films that want you to think about the outcome while Early Grave hits you right in the mouth as a straight slasher.
There is tons of potential in the film and I think the cast did a fairly decent job. The main issue is really just the slow pace of the film before the killing starts. I would recommend fans to watch this film in a very optimistic way and I think you will understand the vision that was being created here. The men will enjoy the A+ looks of the ladies in Early Grave but too many fans will feel rushed at the end when Early Graves comes to it’s conclusion.
Horror fans will enjoy the nostalgic approach to slasher movies found in Early Grave. You will get a true understanding that some secrets you can’t take to the grave with you but they can put you in the grave.
Early Grave is was released on October 8th and from what I hear from the writer should be available on netflix soon. So give it a watch and continue to support Independent horror.
