The P90X Workout...Does it Deliver Results?

P90X is an at-home workout designed to transform your body in 90 days.  But does it?

Designed and led by exercise guru Tony Horton, in conjunction with BeachBody, P90X is a rigorous exercise program which emphasizes a concept known as "muscle confusion". Muscle confusion is a combination of cross-training and periodization that prevents the body from adapting to the exercises over time by switching the routine daily and incorporating new exercises to target the muscles in a variety of ways.  This helps to prevent the "plateau" effect and keeps the participant gaining lean muscle mass while losing excess body fat.  The program combines strength training with yoga, plyometrics, cardio and stretching.  The workouts are preformed six days a week and last approximately one hour, with the exception of the yoga workout which is 90 minutes long.

This workout will most definitely increase your level of fitness and you should certainly see visible results upon completion.  The program guide advises taking measurements prior to beginning and then again in 30 days, 60 days and 90 days.  There are nutritional guidelines to follow and these are included in the DVD set.  Provided that you are following the eating program and consistently adhering to the workouts, you will be quite pleased with the end results.  

Pros:

  • It's convenient and done in the privacy of your own home
  • The exercises are simple and easy to follow
  • There is not much equipment necessary.  Hand weights, a mat, and a pull-up bar is all you need.
  • Modifications are given for most exercises.  

Cons 

  • There is definitely a time commitment of 60-90 minutes per day.
  • This program is NOT for those just starting out.  If you are not already in fairly good condition it can be intimidating.

Overall, this is a great program that has the potential to live up to its claims.  Just make sure you're totally committed and ready for the challenge!
