Guacamole is a crowd favorite, as is sliced avocados, and with football season just around the corner avocados will be in high demand. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a safer way to peel, pit, and slice the creamy, green fruit? The good folks at Oxo do, and they’ve done something about it. The Oxo 3-in-1 Avocado Slicer is made with safety and efficiency in mind.
Guacamole makes me nervous
You all know the drill. You come home with some nice, soft, ripe avocados with rich, creamy, citrusy guacamole on your mind. And while I’m sure that your pre-game table will be filled with Muffulatta Empanadas, Greek Nachos, and Asian Wings, you know everyone will be looking for the guac.
But there is a little bit of high anxiety before you put the finished product on the table. Normally a knife and spoon is used to split, peel, pit, and scoop the avocados. The potential to have a slip of the knife is pretty high when splitting the oval and the worst part is yet to come.
Once you separate the two halves, there it is. One half has the pit staring back at you, and you’re hoping it just magically just falls out. But no such luck. So you hold the pitted half in your hand, take your sharp knife, focus, and in a moment of trepidation you plunge it into the pit hoping you hit the middle. If all goes well a quick twist releases the pit from the flesh, and now you have to get it off of the blade. You have two choices here use your thumb to slide it off, or try to split it all the way through. The first option is safer, but it’s still not idea.
Now grab the spoon and scoop out the flesh, and then slice or mash. Surely there must be a better way.
Oxo thought about the avocado
The Oxo 3-in-1 Avocado Tool takes all of the anxiety out of that familiar little scenario above. They’ve created a tool which simplifies every step of the process, makes them safer, produces excellent results, and makes the whole process much quicker.
The plastic blade at one end of the tool is sharp enough to cut through both the skin and the flesh of the avocado but if it slips, it won’t cut you.
Three metal prongs are recessed into the familiar Oxo no-slip handle. These little gems grab onto the pit making removing very safe, and no wielding of a sharp edge is required. When I first looked at the pit removal part I thought there is no way those little things are going to penetrate the pit deep enough to extract it. I was wrong, they do, it’s easy, trust Oxo. So how do you get the pit out of the tool? Simple, the egg heads at Oxo left a hole on the back side of the handle that you put your finger into and push. It’s both safe and easy.
The other end of the tool has an oval shaped scoop with vertical slicers. It works just like it looks. Just run the scoop/slicer through the flesh, along the inside of the skin, and violà the flesh is separated from the skin and sliced in one motion…nice.
Overall value
At $9.99 retail the Oxo 3-in-1 Avocado Tool is certainly affordable. And while it is a single use tool, when the safety and efficiency of the product is considered I think that it has great value. Clean-up is also a snap as the tool is top rack dishwasher safe.
One way I personally judge the value of anything is to consider that if it breaks, or is lost, would I replace it? The answer in this case is a resounding yes. I don’t mind single purpose built tools as long as they perform their job well. This one certainly does. Do yourself a favor and lower your avocado stress level by getting one.
Stay hungry.
