With many tribute albums to artists, a bar is set high amongst fans to be a successful album. With the The Music Inside: A Collaboration Dedicated to Waylon Jennings, Volume 1, the bar was set with artist renditions by Jamey Johnson, Randy Houser, Sunny Sweeney, Alabama, and more. Two more volumes were to be release, but they soon faded away. Eventually, Average Joes took on the project to release Volume 2 of the Waylon Jennings: The Music Inside trilogy.
There is a contrast between the two volumes. Volume 1 succeeded in picking artists that are devoted to the feeling, the sound, singers that preserve the sound of Waylon Jennings. Volume 2 has a mixture of artists, some questioning fans why they are placed on the album in the first place.
The hot tracks on the album that are the best ones include Dierks Bentley singing "Lonesome, Onry, and Mean," Josh Thompson with "Love of the Common People," "Good Ol' Boys" by Montgomery Gentry, Pat Green with "Rainy Day Woman," and "Mama" by Jessi Colter. Each song provided the listener the singer's interpretation of the song without breaking free from tradition too much.
The rest fall in along the wayside, especially for purists of the traditional sounding of Waylon Jennings. As with any tribute album, some will prefer that the song be done in a different way, whereas others want it done exactly how it was meant to be sung.
The Music Inside: A Collaboration Dedicated to Waylon Jennings, Volume II will be in stores February 7, 2012.
