This past weekend I was looking for some new beer that I had never had before. I came across a mix twelve pack from Anheuser-Busch. Understand that this mixed 12 pack included a bock, lager and a vanilla bourbon cask. I know what you are thinking that is not local or craft beer, but let me explain.
This mix pack from Anheuser-Busch is a testament to the growing power of craft beer. Craft beer is about unique authentic flavors and not simple mass appeal. while I believe the brewers at Anheuser-Busch to be of top level skills, the ability of a mass producer to create something unique but also of widespread appeal is limited in my opinion. This mixed 12 pack was my attempt at seeing what a big beer company can produce within the confines of the craft beer world. As I was saying, the beers included in the box were North Pacific Lager, Beechwood Bock and Vanilla Bourbon Cask. The beers simply were not great. They certainly had some strong flavors such as the vanilla flavor in the bourbon barrel but overall they were honestly mediocre craft beers. I am not anti-Anheuser-Busch or large breweries but these brews were simply not good.
So go ahead and try something a little different this holiday season but stick with Rogue Tennessee Brewworks is having its official opening this Friday December 13th. You can also follow me on twitter and untapped @princessofhops.
