Mary is a normal teenager until she encounters some life changing events, but once she meets Patrick McAlister, heir to the local marbleworks factory, her life changes, and she envisions it changing for the better. She loves her horses, her father and especially her new husband and finally feels she has a complete family. However, this is to be short lived. Within the first year of her marriage, her life has a traumatic change when her father dies unexpectedly, she finds out Patrick isn’t the sweet and gentle man that he presented when they first met, and she soon realizes that she was just a prize that he wanted for himself as a showpiece along with his horse, cars and other luxuries that he had become accustomed to in his spoiled, rich life. When things don’t go his way, in a tantrum he injures Mary severely, stalks out, and she becomes a widow when Patrick is killed in a car accident.

Faced with life without her father and now Patrick, she isn’t sure how she will cope. But Patrick’s grandpop (as she calls him) comes to her rescue. She remains in the large, marble mansion that sits atop the hill that over looks the town. As she becomes more and more of a recluse, the townspeople invent more and more rumors about the mysterious Mary McAllister.

The author does a tremendous job of taking you on the journey through Mary’s life and the lives of the people of Mill River until Mary is in her eighties and upon her death, the town ends up with many surprises about who Mary actually was.

Excerpt from novel below from author’s website:

Disfigured by the blow of an abusive husband, and suffering her entire life with severe social anxiety disorder, the widow Mary McAllister spends almost sixty years secluded in a white marble mansion overlooking the town of Mill River, Vermont. Her links to the outside world are few: the mail, the media, an elderly priest with a guilty habit of pilfering spoons, and a bedroom window with a view of the town below.
