It was on August 19, 1972 at 1:00 a.m. right after Johnny Carson and 'The Tonight Show' that America welcomed the show called 'The Midnight Special'. For most of us we really had no idea what to expect. We knew there was supposed to be a show that would bring us musical groups and top notch comedians. Burt Sugarman saw an opportunity where in some cases right after the Tonight Show some TV stations would simply go off the air.

I was a fan of Johnny Carson but wouldn't necessarily stay up late on Friday nights. I remember watching the first show and was blown away. It literally got better as it went on. Wolfman Jack would introduce the groups and that right there was good enough for me. The groups and stars would include David Bowie, Electric Light Orchestra, Alice Cooper, Peter Frampton, Fleetwood Mac, Heart, and many more. The comedians would be George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Freddie Prinze, Billy Crystal, Steve Martin and Andy Kaufman just to name a few.

The show would catch on and before long you had many of us staying up late to see the guests that Bevin featured for the week. You didn't just have one style of music but a wide variety. For instance, you might have Helen Reddy and Aerosmith on the same night or maybe Alice Cooper and Earth Wind and Fire. This show was simply fun.

StarVista is bringing a six DVD set on September 9, 2014. The quality is excellent and the visual and sound are fantastic. Those of you who remember the show will want to pick this one up. It will bring back memories of all those late night parties that would gather us around the TV to watch the show. For those of you who never got a chance to see the show, it would be great to take a step back in time and see what we had before MTV.

This is one for your personal library. Don't waste any time this is one to pick up and enjoy.
