The locally based chain of sushi /Asian fusion food that is Kona Grill http://www.konagrill.com/ recently underwent re-modeling at their 1st restaurant at Scottsdale Fashion Square. Included on the lunch menu are 2 burgers one of which is the Mauna Kea burger at $14.
Served between a Brioche bun this burger was to be stuffed with Pepper Jack cheese, bacon and jalapenos and topped with onion strings, shredded lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers. Instead the only thing stuffed in it was a bit of cheese with 2 crispy strips of bacon and significantly more cheese melted on top. There were no signs of jalapenos and barely and spice from the Pepper Jack cheese. I guess better to be on top than not at all. If you're expecting the Asian influence you may be disappointed as the only thing that may make give it some flair would be the cucumber slices.
Despite the lack of execution the burger was properly cooked to medium rare, tasted good (despite any spice) and was satisfying. French fries are served on the side and were satisfactory. With proper execution, the anticipated spice (perhaps Asian inspired) and a Pacific - Asian influence this burger has potential.
