“Lastly, grab your clutch, find a mirror & check yourself out!” This is part of the directions from new DIY company Darby Smart’s magazine clutch. Darby Smart connects expert DIY designers with craft-hungry, Pinterest-loving consumers. They search the web for trendy accessories and other house items, team up with the designers and create kits that are easy to DIY! New projects are added to the site each week, with kits ranging from $22 - $44. Plus, all materials are included. More here: https://www.facebook.com/hi.darbysmart
They reached out to me to see if I'd be interested in trying out a kit. I must admit, DIY is not my thing due to my developing lack of patience from years of travelling on tight ballet and retail schedules. But, after I super-glued some of my fingers together, I remembered my elementary school safety tips and I also realized that mod podge glue is a game changer. I don't collage much, but apparently this glue is what creates that shiny finish like a top coat of nail polish. The kit comes with a simple black clutch with a chain strap, glue, a Vogue or Elle magazine and directions printed on cutesy stationary. That's it!
With my creation, I decided to use the pages of the Cecily Brown feature in the March 2012 edition of Vogue. I've always been fascinated with impressionistic paintings depicting the human body. And who can pass up the dramatic and feminine colors Cecily uses in her work. Of course it would be a perfect canvas for my new magazine clutch bag! Check out the slideshow with my creation.
*Cecily Brown's work will be on view September 6 at the Gagosian in Beverly Hills. It's one of her first shows in almost a decade. More here: http://www.gagosian.com/exhibitions/cecily-brown--september-06-2013
