The Legend from 20,000 Leagues: Nautilus Champion Review

He survived untold horrors at the bottom of the deepest oceans, and now he lumbers around the Fields of Justice, wreaking his vengeful wraith on any who happen to cross his path. Easily one of the largest champions in the league, Nautilus, The Titan of the Depths is exactly what you would expect of a giant wielding an anchor for a weapon. He is a tanky dps champion that does well in the jungle and boasts an INCREDIBLE amount of aoe and single target crowd control. Nautilus brings a lot to the game with fresh twists on abilities and a different approach to the typical jungler role.

Abilities:

Staggering Blow (Passive):

Nautilus’s auto attack does additional damage and stuns the enemy for a short duration. This will be available after a few moments again, but new targets can be affected in succession.

Dredge Line (Q):

Nautilus throws his anchor in a straight line, and if an enemy unit is hit, he and the enemy will be pulled to a halfway point between them. If he connects with terrain, Nautilus will be pulled to the wall and the cooldown will be halved for the ability.

Titan’s Wrath (W):

A defensive shield surrounds Nautilus. In addition, any enemies he attacks (and foes within close proximity of that unit) take damage over time. This effect only occurs while the shield is up and active on Nautilus

Riptide (E):

Nautilus causes a shockwave, causing three rings of explosions to erupt from him. Any enemies hit by the riptides will be slowed (it is possible to hit multiple times, but does less damage for each hit.)

Depth Charge (R):

A powerful line of shockwaves that will chase an enemy champion, doing good damage and knocking them up into the air. Any enemies in its pathing will also be knocked up, but take reduced damage.

Summoner’s Rift Overview:

Nautilus is a very interesting champion to have in a team. The amount of CC that he can dish out is extremely high for a single champion to have. While he can easily shut down single targets, his AOE capabilities are what makes him a fantastic asset in team fights. In late game struggles, a Nautilus built to be tanky can be devastating as they are hard to focus down, and still remain to be a massive threat. The only weak point in Nautilus’s gameplay is his weak laning phase. While some have had success as a support tank/solo top champion, most will be forced to jungle with him, and he is not exactly the fastest in clearing neutral camp. Nautilus makes up for it somewhat in great ganking potential and utility in small skirmishes.

Nautilus also scales surprisingly well off of AP, and if you are prepared to be considerably squishier in team fights, a Deathcap/Rod of Ages combo can do an amazing job of catching your foes off guard in terms of raw damage.

Dominion Overview:

Nautilus is so-so in Dominion as he has many good qualities of a defender such as CC and tanky sustain, but because of his slow movement speed and inability to deal large amounts of burst damage, he cannot compare with other high mobility tanky champions. He is easily edged out by champions such as Rammus, Leona, and Singed. If he can pair up with a well-coordinated high dps team, he can secure victory with relative ease.

Summary:

Overall, Nautilus is a very interesting champion to join the League of Legends, and seeing his massive hulking form wreaking havoc either fills you with hope if he is on your team, or dismay if he is on the opposing side. He can turn the tides if played right, and little can be done to stop a fully built Nautilus on a rampage.

Tips and Tricks:

1. Get farm early. Nautilus is slow, so while gold per 10 second items are great, make sure that when you aren’t getting ganks as a jungler, you are making as much money as possible. Like mentioned before, a few items can make Nautilus a mid to late game terror.

2. Focus down high priority targets. Most of the time this means the AP mages or the enemy carries, but sometimes this means removing the other tanks or damage sponges from combat. If you can master your ult and dredge line, you can stop those pesky champions that have massive AOE abilities before they cast them, giving your team time to do what they do best.

3. Nautilus’s shield is a must have ability for farming. Take it early, and while using it in battle, try to make it last. Your damage output will significantly increase as long as it holds.
