The month of September marks a great number of things. The launch of the fall TV season and professional football are the first two things that come...and sometimes those things merge together into something pretty damn unique. Now available on DVD & Blu-Ray; "The League: The Complete Season Four" keeps the hilarity going as the stress of one's fantasy football league spills over into real life.
As America's favorite past time of talking smack to your buddies and making their lives miserable in your fantasy football league is taken to uproarious new heights in its fourth year as the season kicks off with the arrival of Kevin and Jenny's baby (Steven Rannazzisi and Katie Asleton) mark the beginning of the race towards the Shiva Bowl. As Taco (Jonathan Lajoie) tangles with Chicago Bears great Jim McMahon while Andre's (Paul Scheer) tailgating plans go horribly awry the rest of the guys (Mark Duplass & Nick Kroll) contend with dirty and underhanded trades, debates over circumcision, breast-a-lyzers, blackmail, sushi based racism and so very much more.
Show runners Jackie Marcus Schaffer and Jeff Schaffer have fostered some simply fantastic chemistry on this fourth season of a semi improvised show where a group of friends in Chicago who gather together to talk football and get involved in each other's lives. On paper the scenario is pure "been there, done that" but it has some genuinely affecting moments as we can all relate to this motley group of friends. The tones aren't too over the top, while it successfully generates some genuine laughs along with some tender moments. Outside of the frame work of each episode, the shows secret weapon is ultimately the chemistry in the ensemble that get to riff to some pretty hilarious places, which shouldn't work inside the frame work of a sitcom but ultimately does.
Mark Duplass and Nick Kroll are easily the most recognizable names in the ensemble and both bring their A Game as the jokes are flying a mile a minute between all the cast members. Admittedly they don't always land, but with the great chemistry between all 6 featured stars, they easily pick up the slack when it is need throughout the run of the show. A guest star heavy show as numerous NFL players and personalities appear in Season 4 and notable guest stars include Jayma Mays, Timothy Olyphant, Adam Brody, Seth Rogan, Brooklyn Decker and Seth Rogan. It's not high art, but they throw it all against the wall and enough sticks to generate some genuine laughs.
Picture and sound quality on the BD are great, while special features include Extended Episodes, Deleted Scenes some behind the scenes featurettes and a Gag Reel.
Ultimately, the antics on "The League: The Complete Season Four" aren't exactly high art, but you don't need to be in a fantasy football league to get a laugh out of this show.
3 out of 5 stars.
