Tessie Ann Miller is the last of her parents’ five daughters to marry, and she knows exactly who she will marry Marcus King. But Tessie’s father opposes the marriage, giving no reason except that he wants her to marry Levi Smucker. Hoping they will be able to change his mind Tessie and Marcus elope in the English world, returning to their Amish community to live as singles for the time being.
When tragedy strikes Tessie must face the consequences of what they have done. Is there any hope for her now? Find out in The Last Bride book five of the “Home to Hickory Hollow” series, by Beverly Lewis.
I could not put this book down! I have said many times that Lewis is one of my favorite authors and I think this book ranks in her top five of all time. Tessie and Marcus are great characters and I wanted things to work out for them so badly.
It bothered me a bit that I was able to correctly guess Tessie’s father’s reason for opposing their marriage pretty early on. Lewis implies it almost from the very beginning and I was surprised they did not figure it out on their own. I kept expecting there was more to the reason than I had guessed; however by the end it has become a secondary but still important issue, and it did not bother me anymore.
I have enjoyed this series a lot and am sad to see it end. While each book is a stand alone there are a few characters who go from book to book, and I enjoyed seeing characters from “The Heritage of Lancaster County” series, and seeing that story come to a more concrete ending. I also liked how each book addresses an aspect of the English world in the Amish world that is not often addressed in Amish fiction.
Hope is a major theme in this book. Tessie and Marcus have hope that her father will accept them, and later she must hope that things will work out.
On the whole, this is a page-turner. I give it five out of five stars.
