The Innocents (1961)

Based on The Turn of the Screw by Henry James, The Innocents is ranked among the best ghost movies of all time. Starring Deborah Kerr as governess Miss Giddens, The Innocents brings James' tale to life and strikes fear into the hearts of viewers.

When Miss Giddens takes a job as the governess of two children out in the middle of nowhere she is convinced that it will be peaceful. But upon arrival she realizes that there is more than meets the eye. After learning of the deaths of a former groundskeeper and governess she soon begins to see the specters everywhere. When the rest of the staff thinks her mad, Miss Giddens seeks the help of the children to prove that the ghosts really do stalk the grounds.

It is this reviewer's opinion that The Innocents is one of the best horror films ever made. The performances in this film are stunning. The storyline is intriguing and really strikes up the viewer's interest in the original story, The Turn of the Screw. Containing no violence, this film has the ability to scare the viewer with the simple use of imagery and words.
