I’ve been reading several stories this week about a new software program touted as a Stalkers Tool and that it could find breadcrumbs of information and locate anyone anywhere. Well I do a fair amount computer forensics myself and got curious about checking out the software as a tool to locate computer owners as part of my arsenal of software I use to determine ownership in my job.
After locating and downloading the software I played with it for a little while but soon found out that all the hype about this program are not true. The first thing I found out when opening the program is that you have to log on to Twitter to get a passcode number before you are even authorized to use it. If you were truly a Stalker this would be a handicap since everyone would know it’s you doing the stalking.
Secondly, after playing with it I found out it only works with Twitter and Flickr and that’s it. So if you were truly stalking someone they would either have a Twitter or Flickr account for you to track them. Since I don’t even have a Twitter or Flickr account I stumbled onto my first problem of being authorized to even use the software.
So I did a work around a created a fictitious account which solved that problem. Of course any so called Stalker would probably do the same thing so he could not be detected and that solved my first problem. But as any computer forensics guy knows he could also be tracked down by his IP address unless he masked it with other popular TOR software.
Now not every stalker is a savvy computer hacker and expert so I’m not sure he would go to all that trouble in the first place. This software only allows its user to track Twitter and Flicker accounts so I found it basically useless in my job because I can’t use it to track someone on the internet. The whole internet and not only two accounts are needed in the software to truly find all the information needed to track someone and get enough information to determine their habits.
Not everyone has a Twitter account and neither did I. My life’s just not that interesting to Twitter about it in the first place. I guess if you were a Stalker who only prefers to stalk people on Twitter this is the program for you. But all the hype about it is just that. It really serves no purpose for the professional user and is very limited for use as a Stalker too. So don’t bother downloading it if you truly want to find someone because you will need more sleuth than what this program offers to track that elusive subject!
