One of the new films coming to theatres this month is "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit." The popular character Jack Ryan has been in many books by the late Tom Clancy. A lot of these books have been adapted into movies. The first of these movies was "The Hunt for Red October," which came out in 1990.
"The Hunt for Red October" stars Alec Baldwin as Jack Ryan, a top-notch CIA analyst who is helping to find a missing submarine: the Red October. It was taken by Marko Ramius (played by Sean Connery), a Russian captain. Jack believes Marko is defecting to the United States. But others in the intelligence community believe he is going to start an attack on the west. Jack does not have a lot of time to prove that the U.S. has nothing to fear from Captain Ramius and the Red October.
"The Hunt for Red October" features a great lead performance by Alec Baldwin. This film came out fairly early in his career, and he makes an excellent hero. Sean Connery is, as always, perfect. His character is mysterious at first, but we learn he is sympathetic as the story moves on.
The movie does not feature a lot of action scenes until the end. Yet director John McTiernan makes most of the film is very suspenseful. He made excellent use of the submarine environment.
"The Hunt for Red October" is the best film in this franchise. Hopefully, "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" will be just as good.
