GayFest! – a festival of GLBT theater to be held August 6-24 at three theatres throughout Philadelphia - produced by Quince Productions is the third annual festival of GLBT theatre in Philadelphia. This year’s GayFest! will take place at three theaters: Plays & Players (Skinner Studio), Second Stage at the Adrienne, and the Playground at the Adrienne, with additional performances at Tabu upstairs lounge. It will feature four mainstage plays (two world premieres and two Philadelphia premieres) as well as staged readings of new plays and a variety of one-night stands by performers representing the diversity of the GLBT performance community, for a total of almost 50 performances.
I was lucky enough to be in attendance at THE HOMOSEXUALS, written by Philip Dawkins. The play is a unique one, as it is a collection of vignettes told retrospectively through the eyes of Evan (played with youthful energy and nuance by Zachary J Chiero), who attempts to seek his identity as a gay man in New York City. The cast of merry men (and one "hag"), fill each vignette with a wide range of personality and neuroses: the flamboyant dandy Peter (Chris Melohn), the seductive and exotic British Mark (Sebastian Cummings), the old flame Collin (Dexter Anderson), the straight-forward and blunt Mark (Shamus Hunter McCarty), the fed-up and fiesty girlfriend Tam (Katherine Perry), and the loveable and leaveable sidekick Michael (Frank Schierloh).
Other plays featured in GayFest! are SOMEONE BROUGHT ME by Daniel Talbott, a world premiere specially commissioned for GayFest!, focuses on a world in the near future “somewhere in what used to be New York City," COLD, a world premiere by Sarah Pappalardo opens on a frigid Chicago night, as Linda, a quiet, stoic butch holds a gun to her head in her once-legendary, now-empty lesbian dive bar, and finally, the Philadelphia premiere of THE NEW CENTURY by Paul Rudnick. In Rudnick’s hilarious comedy, we see a Long Island matron and "supermom" to three GLBT children.
