I may just be a glutton for punishment but I decided to give another short story by Drac Von Stoller a try. Now, I have read a couple of Von Stoller’s short stories and did not like them at all. Playing the role of the eternal optimist, I dove into the very short story “The Haunted Mirror.”
Emilu Redding was the ugliest girl in the world. One day, her classmates dared her to challenge the local witch, Helga, and her possessed mirror to see if this would make Emilu less ugly (and maybe even attractive). Emilu takes the bet and is never seen again but an urban legend is born.
I almost hate to write this review but this is another very poor story by Von Stoller. There is no real action or even purpose to this story. While it is flash fiction and thus there is little time to develop the story at all through its form, there is really nothing here. There is an ugly girl, a challenge by classmates, the girl goes to the witch’s house, the girl is never heard from again. This story reads almost as a random pairing of paragraphs rather than a story. Given the flash, or short short, story form, I could almost forgive this but the poor grammar (which was an issue in the other stories I read by the author) suggest little effort and less proofreading went into this story. I am sure I will read more by Von Stoller in the future and I hope that they will be better than the small sampling I have read to this point.
