Children deal with issues in various ways; however, there is a refreshing series of books called "The Growing Up Series" by author David L. Watkins. I had the opportunity to read the first two books in the series, "Benny and the Basketball Bully", and "Lancaster Lion and Friends" then interview the author.
"The Growing Up Series" is the creation of David Watkins and his wife, Linda Watkins, who are members of Church of Christ Elmwood Park on the east side of Detroit, Michigan. David is a postal employee, author and illustrator who also creates greeting cards. David, who has been writing since he was young, wants to write and draw full-time, while his wife manages the technical aspects of their company, DLW Publishing. David's illustrations can be seen in the second book of the series, "Lancaster Lion and Friends". You can meet the Watkins and purchase their books and greeting cards at the Detroit Historical Museum on Saturday, February 2, 2013 between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Each book in "The Growing Up Series" is designed to entertain children while teaching them a valuable lesson. "Benny and the Basketball Bully" teaches a non-violent approach to bullying and maintains that it is honorable to be able to stand up and walk away. "Lancaster Lion and Friends" shows courage and encourages collaboration and teamwork. Readers can anticipate the third book in this series by August 2013. Entitled "Melvia for Mayor", this book will focus on kindness. All of David Watkins' books are available online or at your local Bible bookstores.
