Let's review for a moment. Don Vito (Marlon Brando) is dead due to a heart attack. His son Sonny (James Caan) was gunned down at the toll way plaza. His son Fredo (John Cazale) is out in Las Vegas learning the Hotel business. His son Michael (Al Pacino) is the new Don of the Corleone Family.
Michael has killed of the five heads of the five families. He has moved the family to the mountains out by Lake Tahoe. They live in a complex guarded like Ft Knox. When the movie opens we see the family celebrating Michael's son first communion. Anthony Corleone (James Gounaris) son of Michael Corleone has received his first communion and you would think the whole state of Nevada has been invited. Yes we have the line to get those favors from the Don. We have from the East Frank Pantangeli (Michael V. Gazzo) a trusted member of the Corleone crime family. We have Senator Pat Geary (G.D. Spradlin) who has to talk to the Don. We have his sister Connie (Talia Shire) and her boyfriend/lowlife Merle Johnson (Troy Donahue) wanting for money to go get married. In other words the Don's life is never an easy one.
Mama Corleone (Morgana King) is also living out in the compound and at times has to be peacemaker between all the factions. Much has changed from those simple days back in New York. You see the Corleone's didn't always have this much money and prestige. Long ago young Vito (Robert De Niro) was working in a deli and he lost his job because the local head of the Black Hand stepped in to get his nephew a job in the Deli.
The first time Vito met Clemenza (Bruno Kirby) was when he asked him through a window to hide some guns for him. The two would become friends and build an empire.
In Godfather II, you learn how Vito came to America and the rise he took in those early days. You get to see the familial side of Michael and Kay (Diane Keaton) . You also see the ending of their marriage. In part II you see Michael and Hyman Roth (Lee Strasberg) out of Miami travel to Cuba in the 1950's and try to take over the Casino and Hotel industry. The family is big business now and people want what they have. Michael almost gets assassinated. Senator Geary tries to blackmail Michael and it's Michael who turns the tides on Geary, setting him up for a murder.
With this movie you open up so many doors you just don't know which one to follow. Director Francis Ford Coppola does a wonderful job but in the end you wonder about so many directions the movie took and you are left with a few questions.
Michael turns out to be one cool cookie and he is more a murderer than his father ever was. So sit back and look at one of the most dysfunctional families to ever have graced the screen.
