This year I decided that I would read one classic work of fiction every month in order to broaden my horizons when it comes to reading. I started with one that I have wanted to read since I was a child but never got around to: The Giver by Lois Lowry.

“Jonas's world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear or pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the Community. When Jonas turns twelve, he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now, it is time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.” –Goodreads.com

I absolutely loved this book! It is my firm belief that it may have influenced a good chunk of The Hunger Games series. The world in which Jonas lives in is horrific and only he and the giver know the real truth of the world. Everything about this book is perfection: the characters, the plot, the setting, the sequence of events, the descriptions. I would highly recommend this book to both adults and young adult readers.

While this is a young adult novel, please remember that it does contain frightening images and a great deal of violence, so it may not be suitable for readers under the age of 12.
