Every so often a move gets released that deserves to be called a film The Frozen Ground starring Nick Cage and John Cusack is one of them.
This serial killer thriller which may seem on the surface to be just another B movie serial killer thriller actually delivers the goods along with stellar performances from John Cusack as the deadly dark killer and Nick Cage as the detective who is becomes deeply attached to the case.
So you might be asking, what is the big deal? Isn't this just standard fare for serial killer movies? Yes, that is correct but it's the way that this thriller unfolds and the honesty of the performances from both Cusack and Cage that really elevate it above other films.
Cage who seems to have moved dispassionately from one project to the next seemed to be teetering on the edge of that precipitous drop into low grade B movies really sinks his teeth into this part and pulls out all the stops showing us his great acting chops have not disappeared.
Based on the true story of an Alaskan detective who puts it all on the line to capture the murderous Robert Hansen, a serial killer who did his thing in Anchorage for over 13 years. The detective's only ally is a hooker who managed to escape the killer's grasp and must deal with her demons in order to stand up to the monster. Sounds by the number and it could have been just that in the hands of a lesser writer but this one transcends.
It opened in both theaters and VOD on August 23 so if you're looking for something good, check it out.
