The Fratellis exist someplace between The Faces and Stones of yesteryear, and Jet from the not so recent musical past. We Need Medicine is more like an old home remedy than any sort of great American (or Scottish, as that’s where they’re from) cure.
Although a few of these tracks fall a little flat, many of them rise valiantly to the occasion. For example, it’s impossible not to love “Shotgun Shoes,” which rocks to a Stones-y rhythm groove ought to make Keith Richards jealous. There are also plenty of welcome retro elements inserted throughout, such as the old time rock & roll saxophone part that spices up “Halloween Blues” or the twang-y electric guitar groove that anchors the all too true “Rock N Roll Will Break Your Heart.”
And be not fooled by all its many promises, rock N Roll WILL break your heart. The Fratellis don’t seem to be deterred by such danger signs though, as they barrel onward making loose and enjoyable rock music. This may not be an album that will change the world, but if you’re looking for something that may just make you smile in the middle of your bad day, give We Need Medicine a try.
