The Foundation Room: Asian elegance in a corner of the Mardi Gras casino

The Foundation Room restaurant at Showboat AC

The last place you might expect to find an Indian/Asian décor restaurant would be in a casino with a Mardi Gras theme, right? Well, if you’re talking about the Foundation Room at Showboat, you’d be wrong. And if you’re in the neighborhood, the Foundation Room is a place you don’t want to miss! Recently, my husband and I had the pleasure of dining there as a guest of Showboat.

Tucked away on the House of Blues end of Showboat at the top of the long escalator is the Foundation Room, one of the most unique dining experiences in Atlantic City. Upon arriving at our reservation time, we were greeted by our hostess Suleicka and then by the concierge, Jennifer Miltner. We were seated immediately, immediately after we finished taking some amazing photographs, that is. (You can see them by clicking HERE.)

The décor is very unique. The walls are covered in squares of some of the most striking fabric you could ever imagine. The ceilings are painted in exquisite scenes. The room is replete with beautiful artwork and sculptures at every turn. It’s almost like you were instantly teleported to Asia!

Jennifer gave us a tour. The Foundation Room is more like a kaleidoscope of little rooms than one big room. There are several very cozy small lounges that can be rented out for private partying or reserved for an intimate dinner. There is a also small banquet room that would make a fantastic place for company luncheons or get-togethers. The bar is done in a heavy wood in the same Asian theme. The main dining room is a little larger but still maintains that “cozy” feel.

At first, the menu might seem a bit limited. There is a good selection of what the Foundation Room calls “small bites,” meant for noshing after the music at House of Blues or for when you really don’t want a full meal. I have to say that the ones we tried were out of this world. There were three entrees on the menu, each one looking better than the next.

Our waiter was Josh. He was friendly, efficient and knew the food well. We began with three items from the Small Bites Menu:

  • Sopes
  • Bacon-Wrapped Dates
  • Grilled Flatbread

I didn't think I could handle an entrée on top of these wonderful (and large) appetizers, so we decided to split one. We chose the Filet Mignon entrée. It was cooked perfectly for my husband's medium well taste and fork tender. (You can see all the food by clicking HERE.)

As the food was being served, we got a chance to chat with Chef Ryan McCabe, the chef who oversees the cuisine for the Foundation Room. Chef Ryan told me that the Foundation Room also handles food service for banquets, the Music Hall and even a noodle bar.

There was only one dessert on the menu and we were pretty full, but we decided we had to try it. It was Cronuts drizzled in Nutella and caramel, served with ice cream. To say this was yummy was an understatement!

We left the Foundation Room stuffed, but very happy.

Now it's your turn. When you are ready to experience the most unique dining experience in Atlantic City, go to the Boardwalk end of Showboat and take the long escalator to the second floor. Right now, the Foundation Room is open Fridays 6 to 11 p.m. and Saturdays 6 to 12 midnight. Reservations are recommended. You can make yours by calling 609-343-4523.

I have eaten in many great dining establishments in Atlantic City’s casinos, but the Foundation Room, by far, has the most unique ambience you’ll find anywhere. Everyone was friendly, the service was excellent, the surroundings warm and the food was beyond compare. There is no other restaurant like it, to my mind, in Atlantic City.

Enjoy your meal!
