Although Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky day for some, it is the day fans of the "Hobbit" books and films will be able to see one of the year's most anticipated films: "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug." This movie is the sequel to "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," which came out around this time last year. These movies are prequels to "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.
"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" stars Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit who lives by himself. Until recently, his life was pretty uneventful. He is chosen by Gandalf (played by Ian McKellen), a wizard, to help a group of dwarves reclaim their kingdom, which was taken over by a dragon. Bilbo is reluctant at first, but he ultimately decides to join them so he can have an adventure.
Like "The Lord of the Rings" films, this movie has stunning special effects and action scenes. One of the best scenes in the movie is the final battle, which is as intense as any of the battle from the first "The Lord of the Rings" film. Another great scene is one from early in the film that shows the dragon taking over the kingdom of the dwarves.
As Bilbo, Martin Freeman is perfect. He shows that his character is both very smart and very resourceful. Ian McKellen is, as always, great as Gandalf. He is also very smart. There are a number of cameos from actors playing their characters from "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. One great scene features Andy Serkis reprising his role as Gollum, the creature Bilbo got the ring from.
This movie is a good choice to watch before seeing "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug." Fast readers can read the book before the end of the week.
