Arthur Conan Doyle ranked his 1893 Sherlock Holmes story titled The Final Problem his fourth favorite.
This story introduces Holmes’s greatest opponent, Professor Moriarty. At the beginning of the story, Holmes has escaped three murder attempts. Moriarty has warned Holmes to withdraw his pursuit of justice or face a regrettable outcome.
Holmes figures out that Moriarty is behind a highly organized and extremely secret criminal force and Holmes believes if he can bring down Moriarty, it would be his crowning achievement.
However Holmes’s showdown with Moriarty does not end as planned and leaves a heartbroken Dr. Watson.
