With a beautiful indoor/outdoor setting complete with water fountain outside, The Fig Tree Café’s newest location at 2400 Historic Decatur Rd, suite #103 in Liberty Station, San Diego, CA, has a wonderful menu for the person who can eat whatever they like. But even better is the fact that about seventy-five percent of the menu is already or can be made gluten-free.
What was that you say? It is in fact very rare even now to find a restaurant with so many choices for someone with gluten intolerance or sensitivity. Sure there is usually “something” these days, but how nice to have almost as many choices as the person next to you with no issues. Seriously accommodating.
Panini’s, toast with breakfast, and even cinnamon French toast! You’ll get charged seventy-five cents extra for gluten-free multi-grain bread, but frankly that is nothing with most restaurants that even care enough to offer these items charging two dollars or more for anything with gluten-free attached to the name.
The inside of the restaurant is modern and comfortable and with a friendly wait staff happy to recommend favorites if you get stuck, which you will because you will probably be overwhelmed by all the gluten-free choices in front of you.
Just a few of the menu items that are not only gluten-free but interesting includes:
- Breakfast Sushi (not sushi at all) - is three “rolls” wrapped in their signature “man candy” (thick bacon baked with brown sugar and paprika) around rice and scrambled eggs with scallions, and plum sauce on the side. Mango salad comes on the side of this dish, not to be missed!
- Meatloaf Hash- made with three eggs any style with spinach, diced meatloaf, pesto, house potatoes, and bread choice.
- Andouille Sausage Omelet- with marinated mushrooms, caramelized onions, and spinach.
Celiac sufferers who eat here will really enjoy the impressive gluten-free menu with items for breakfast and lunch ranging in price from $8-$12, and portions that are very generous. Overall, The Fig Tree Café offers a fantastic “oasis” for patrons who are in need of delicious gluten-free menu that’s more complete than almost any menu you’ve seen available in restaurants in the past.
