The Durabook S15C rugged notebook is the next great laptop in a long line of “you can’t break this laptop” developed and released by GammaTech.
The S15C comes standard with all the major features in industry standard laptops, but goes above the pack and standards by offering unbeatable security and protection for your data and the laptop as a whole.
The Magnesium alloy case is close to 20 times stronger than ABS plastic, thus, offering a significantly higher survival rate after drops and bumps, including 3+ foot falls on hardwood and concrete. It is also strong enough to protect the unit’s core components at it has been tested to MIL-STD 810G specification for drop, shock and spill protection to insure the systems reliability in the field. This also makes it the perfect solution for the professional road warrior. Paired with s 3G/4G stick, you will never be out of touch or miss a thing.
The 15.6” HD display is nothing short of stunning. The clarity is excellent, even in direct sunlight. The laptop is powered by the Intel i5 and i7 CPU platform. Standard features include an RS232 Serial port, TPM 1.2 data security and a Smart Card Reader. System options include a Bluetooth 2.1 module and a 1.3 mega pixel webcam.
As with other Durabook model’s reviewed here, there were no surprises with unboxing and first time startup. The battery appeared to come with ¾ charge, so happily booted immediately. From powering on to surfing the net after connecting to WiFi, took less than 10 minutes first time. This al included windows registration, etc. Each subsequent boot, took less than 30 seconds.
There will also be additional protection thanks to GammaTech’s unique spill-resistant design, so you can go ahead and have that spillage accidentl over the keyboard and nothing inside will get fried. Not only that, the touchpad and switches are also protected from spills as it won’t seep into sensitive interior parts. With GammaTechs exclusive optical-disk-tray lock, there will be no unintentional tray ejection due to drop and vibration.
The inclusion of double protection smart battery circuitry makes sure that any damage caused by current or voltage surges and overheating will be prevented.
How does it fare in terms of performance though? With a choice of Intel i7 and i5 processors chipset, you certainly won’t be stuck with a performance slump. With its dual-channel DDR III SODIMM slots it will deliver up to 8GB of memory. With an internal optical drive slot, you can opt between a DVD super-multi drive or Blu-Ray Disk combo drive.
This appears to be the best all around laptop to come out of Gammatech. Its uses will span industries, positions, etc. I, infact would call this the “Road warriors’ dream machine, due to its indestructibility, ease of use and expandability.
