When moves go straight to video but are packed with star typically big budget stars, it leaves you wondering why. Sometimes it’s bad distribution, while a lot of times it’s just a bad movie. The Double is the latest of these types of films starring Richard Gere, Martin Sheen, and Topher Grace, all actors that have had their own share of success in the box office.
The Double follows a retired CIA operative and rookie FBI agent as they team up trying to solve the murder of a US senator who is thought to be the a legendary Soviet assassin thought to be dead. As they move through the cases from the past and present it forces them to re-examine everyone around them. This is one of those films that are really confusing on why it never got a wider released. This is a great spy thriller that works on every level. Gere steps into this obsessed CIA agent filling him with the determination and torment to make this character. Topher Grace jumps in and carries his own weight alongside Gere with no problem playing with his own obsessions in the film. The rest of the cast do a good job filling it out and making it all come together. The story itself seems to be a bit generic at first, but as it moves forward starts taking some unexpected twists and turns making it an even better film. There are some great action moments, with Gere really carrying them with signs of Liam Neeson from Taken. This everyman actor brings believability to the role that it needed to make it work.
This is a great thriller with a great cast. Its sad this film didn’t get a wider release or more promotion, audiences will be sure to love it. If you like this genre or the actors involved, this is a must see film. Ignore its straight to video release, this is a big movie deserving of its stars and release and should not be missed.
