The machinations of a leader and the resulting devastation they bring are nothing new to the Star Wars Universe. In Dark Horse Comics’ Star Wars: Jedi – The Dark Side #5 the recurring theme in the Star Wars mythology returns creating enticing political drama. Written by Scott Allie with art by Mahmud Asrar the culminations of the events in the Star Wars: Jedi – The Dark Side series have a profound effect on the future of the Jedi.
The world of Telos IV has erupted into civil war. The insurgency that was spurred on with the assassination of a key political figure is taking the fight directly to the palace of Lord Crion. The plans of Lord Crion have been spinning out of control since the death of his daughter. What was once planned to cement his family’s rule over Telos IV and spark nationalism among the people is now a war. The Jedi are split over what to do and difficult decisions must be made.
Scott Allie takes one of the main themes from the Star Wars Universe, a ruler using subversion and war to strengthen their hold on their subjects, and then spins the theme in a new direction. The politics create more intrigue testing the limits of the Jedi’s role as peacekeepers. The tough decisions that face Qui-Gon Jinn and Xanatos are painful and not easy. Allie makes you feel the internal torment of the characters that are caught in the crossfire of a building war and an angered and deceived populace.
The art is very dynamic with Asrar’s characters springing to life. Asrar’s art gets bigger and more explosive as the story builds to the climax. The story switches from several different settings quickly and Asrar never loses you as the story unfolds at an incredible pace. With beautiful sets and a dazzling lightsaber duel the art does not disappoint.
The decision: The Star Wars: Jedi – the Dark Side series has been a remarkable chapter in the Star Wars saga. Qui-Gon Jinn who was a veritable blank slate outside of Star Wars - Episode I: The Phantom Menace sees his character developed in a way that will foreshadow many of his actions as a pivotal figure in the mythology of Star Wars. Scott Allie has done a lot to make you care about the characters whether they are good or bad. The art of Mahmud Asrar is beautiful and lives up to the expectations of a Star Wars epic.
