Analyzing a comedy is a tough thing to do. I mean, I laugh a lot. I especially laugh a lot during movies, some of them very serious ones. Sometimes, I have no explanation for why I am laughing. I know what I am seeing or hearing is funny to me for some reason, but it is hard to explain why it is. A lot of comedy is this way. It is often very bizarre and that is perhaps why it is so funny, but trying to explain it not only is a difficult task, but it takes away the funniness of the comedy. So here I am writing a review for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues. What can I say? This movie is Funny (note the capital F).
When a sequel to Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy was announced I was both overjoyed and extremely frightened. Overjoyed, I was, because the first movie is one of my favorite comedies ever made. It is one of those movies that, while I loved it when I first saw it, it seems somehow to only get funnier over the years. I haven't stopped quoting it and reminiscing about its many hilarious moments since its release and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon. However, I was also terrified at the thought of a sequel. What if it was bad? What if it tarnished the legacy of the first film? What if this was the start of a whole new series of Anchorman movies, including direct to video sequels produced by National Lampoon and starring "comedians" in name only? I didn't want to have to mention the word "Anchorman" and have to clarify that I was talking about the original Anchorman, before it became an unstoppable abomination of a series.
Well, I can now breathe a huge sigh of relief because Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is absolutely a worthy sequel. As far as comedy goes, it had me laughing, literally non-stop, from start to finish. These weren't small laughs either, they were humongous I-can't-breathe-I-am-laughing-so-hard laughs. Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is pure joy somehow extracted and blown up onto the movie screen for all to witness. At least, that's how it played for me.
I can't say whether Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is a comedy that will appeal to everyone. In writing reviews, my aim is never really to tell people what they should or shouldn't watch. Everyone has different opinions and what I try to offer with my reviews is my own special take on what each movie meant to me. So when I say Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is incredibly funny, I mean it. However, the humor is often bizarre and sometimes crude so I can see reasons that people might not "get" the movie or just find it offensive. Well, maybe I wouldn't understand the offensive part.
Anyway, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is a delight from start to finish. Everything that I had thought of before the movie that I was hoping to see in this movie was there. This sequel, in fact, blew my expectations out of the water. This is a sequel very worthy of the original. As for which one is better, the sequel or the original, it is really hard to top the original and the impact it had on my life (or at least my conversations with friends). The original, so far, seems to be more quotable to me whereas the humor in this one is harder to quote out of context, but it hasn't even been a full day since I have seen this movie. Perhaps, with time and with repeated viewings of this movie, the quotes will start flowing out more and more.
In a comedy, the main goal in the movie is to make one laugh. Well, I never stopped laughing in this comedy so I would say that is about as close to perfect as you can get. Really, I couldn't ask for anything more from Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues. The only flaw I see with this movie is that it ended. I didn't want the laughs to ever stop. Perhaps they'll make another movie and make this a trilogy (and then make another trilogy and another trilogy and another trilogy and a reboot). Thinking about this prospect gives me hope for another comedy as funny as this one, but once again brings back the fears that I had before this movie was released. So far, so great, however, and let's hope it stays classy!
