'The Castle Project': A paranormal documentary
This documentary was directed by Brian Higgins and his partner Travis who bought the "Croker Petterson mansion to turn into a bed and breakfast.
Brian, along with his partner Travis McAfoos, took on the huge project of restoring the mansion which needed a huge makeover. This building is very old, built in 1890, It's also a large amount of space, 14,000 sq feet. A daunting task that Brian and Travis took on.
Restoring the mansion is a big job, but it becomes even more difficult when you are confronted by paranormal activity.
The history of the house certainly has many reasons for a haunting:
- Drug addiction
- Death in the mansion
- Child murder
- Gravestones moved, but not the bodies in the graves
- Some of the graves are thought to be Native American (always a risk for a haunting)
- Former owner's son left strange things in basement such as body parts preserved in glass jars
Many groups have investigated the castle:
Colorado Ghost Hunting Group
These are just some of the investigations who have walked the halls of this massive former home of the Croke family and the Patterson family.
Some of the activity in the house hasn't been seen by humans, but detected by dogs. Two dogs in particular that were left in the house ended up going crazy from staying in the house overnight.
After Brian heard all of the construction workers and others who've had paranormal experiences, he wanted to find out, once and for all, if his new purchase was haunted or not.
After gathering together all the equipment he would need, he settles into staying in the mansion, by himself for several nights.
Brian had all his equipment and his dog. He got white orbs and decided they were lights.
There is rapping somewhere nearby and the dog seems to be upset. Brian reveals that the house gets into your head. He was obsessed with it.
Bat is in his room, had to chase it out. Wonders what happens after you die? Decides that no one knows.
Nothing reported for night four. Wants something to show itself.
Stormy night. Found an old Jacket and bag of Oreos. Also found some rat poop. There were artifacts found in a wall. There is now a lady friend of Brian's who is staying with him, she has two dogs. In the basement they got an EVP that said 'help me.' Brian's friend asks if she needs help and the creepy answer came back as 'yessssss.'
Nothing for night eight or nine.
Has audio recorder going and they got the rapping sounds. One of the dogs started barking at something outside the the room.
Nothing for night 11, 12 or 13.
Why are so many people interested in ghosts. He also smells something like mildew, dust, earth. There are recorded sounds, these sounded like electricity to me. Brian catches a person on video, which is very scary. He also catches an EVP that sounds like whispers, he was alone. One EVP also seems to be saying 'men' over and over.
In my opinion, the EVP seems to be saying, 'It's in the basement.'
The film goes on to explain about where the stones came from that the mansion was built with.
There are also some mysterious things happened, the worst of which is a fire that destroys much of the work that had been done.
The film then goes into such things as comparing Dante's "Divine Comedy" to purgatory. Compares a lot of architecture symbolism to castles with very similar architecture in Europe.
A former owner of the mansion, from the seventies, reveals that almost no relationships last while owning the mansion. The final words of the doc reveal that long time partners Brian and Travis break up out of nowhere after the film is finished.
