Urban marsupials rejoice! ADK Packworks has come up with a bag based on a basket that works like a pack, shoulder bag, and tote to haul your wares from point A to point B and beyond. If whatever you need to carry is smaller than 15”H x 11.5”W x 8”D, you can toss it in an ADK tote and be on your way. It’s the bag that’s better than most the bags you already own.
If you live in one of these areas, you probably have already considered some of the numerous reusable bag options available to you today. If you live outside of one of those areas, but happen to be interested in cutting down on all those plastic and paper bags that fill your garbage and recycling bins, you’ve probably at least taken a look at what you could use as an alternative. The Grocer (click link for Flickr photoset), from ADK Packworks, may very well be the best general purpose, multi-function tote available today.
What makes it different:
Firstly, it’s freestanding. Unlike just about every other bag you own, The Grocer has a light internal frame that makes the bag stand up with its mouth agape ready to take whatever load you need to carry. This makes it great for the market, great for the gear, great for hauling whatever you haul wherever you haul it.
Secondly, the bag is made out of Ripstop Nylon. This light and tough material is attached to the frame via two strips of hook and loop fastener, which makes for easy removal when it comes time to wash the bag. Despite the care label (which I initially missed) recommending hand-washing, I washed the test samples provided by ADK in my front-load washing machine on the delicate cycle with no adverse effects.
Thirdly, ADK makes a liner and a lid for The Grocer. The liner is designed to keep things like ice cream and meats cool. The topper helps keep the load on the inside when the bag is strapped to your back and your backside is on a bike seat.
Lastly, these bags are fantastically versatile. Thanks to the surprisingly simple strap system, The Grocer can be carried like a tote, grocery bag, shoulder bag, or backpack, making it the perfect choice for gathering groceries like you would in one of those dirty baskets provided by the store, getting them to the register, and then getting them home. I’ve been using one of the samples as my daily carrier for my hat, lunch, an extra layer and my new super-spiffy Monoprice headphones.
The only problem The Grocer from ADK Packworks presents is what to do with all the reusable bags you already own. Simple: If you happen to have a break room or some other kind of common area at your place of employment, set up an impromptu bag giveaway. The one I set up prompted some co-workers to gather their extra reusable bags and donate them to the cause of paying it forward. By the end of the day, all the bags had new homes and everyone was happy.
