While producing nearly 400 hours of original programming each and every year it is no surprise that there are a great number of memorable moments and matches produced for the WWE Universe on Raw and Smackdown each and every week. Compilations and sets like this are always very subjective, but available today as a two disc Blu-Ray set it's time to look back on the year that was with "The Best of Raw & Smackdown: 2012".
It was a year of non-stop thrills as 2012 once again showed that anything can truly happen inside of a WWE ring as Raw on Monday nights and SmackDown on Friday nights continue to offer the most shocking, surprising, athletic, humorous, and dramatic moments on television. In this set 52 unforgettable weeks get s boiled down here to some of the most amazing in ring action and shocking moments that 2012 had to offer the WWE Universe.
Sets like this are always so incredibly subjective, however I will say that when they get it right on this set, the people behind assembling it got it really right as easily some of the best in ring action from Raw and Smackdown is at the fore front with matches including the likes of CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, Kane, John Cena, Randy Orton, Sheamus and Alberto Del Rio are sprinkled throughout the 2 disc set as well as highlights from the man who was easily the breakout star of 2012 with big things coming up for him in 2013; The Show off Dolph Ziggler who is featured in six different matches against some of the a fore mentioned best and stole the show each and every time. Other excellent matches included the Champion vs. Champion match as CM Punk and Daniel Bryan put on a wrestling clinic on Raw and the No DQ war between Randy Orton and Wade Barrett as well as countless others. The one plus of Raw expanding to three hours this year is that some of these talented in-ring performers actually get a chance to work and entertain in the ring instead of the 2 minute squashes that we'd see everywhere other then the main event.
There are also some pretty epic promos and moments on set including the shocking return of Brock Lesnar to the WWE, the war of words between the Rock and John Cena leading up to their Wrestlemania encounter as well as CM Punk's quest for respect and some well intentioned lessons in anger management.
The picture and sound quality on the Blu-Ray are simply first rate, and the Blu-Ray features an additional 90 minutes of promos and matches as well as some never before seen backstage interviews.
"The Best of Raw & Smackdown: 2012" will never satisfy everyone, but there are some really excellent matches on this set that make it worthwhile for any wrestling fan to pick up.
4 out of 5 stars.
