The Berenstain Bears: Get Ready for Christmas,by Jan & Mike Berenstain, Zonderkidz, 2011,12 Pages, Ages 2 and up, ISBN-13: 978-0310720829, $6.99

When the lovable Berenstain Bears get ready to decorate for Christmas, Sister only finds baby Jesus in the box marked “Manger Scene” amidst the Christmas boxes stored in the closet.

Mama and Brothers join Sister to search the house for Joseph, Mary, the camels, wise men in disguise as wise bears, the Christmas star, angels, shepherds, sheep, stable, the donkey and the other animals. The absent pieces are found behind “lift-the-flaps” in this children’s flap book that resembles an Advent calendar.

Just as in Advent calendars, when the Bears lift window, door and furniture flaps, they find the missing animals and Nativity characters underneath the flaps. Children will delight to find and lift the flaps as the story progresses and will ask for the story to be read again and again.

This simple, age appropriate book for young children, introduces the basic elements of the Christmas story with colorful illustrations and words children easily understand as families join together to celebrate Jesus’ birth.

After the Berenstain Bears set up the manager scene, they gather together around the nativity scene and end the story with, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace!”

A perfect read for small children in the days before Christmas, or for purchase as a Christmas gift.
