Sprouting is the practice of germinating seeds to be eaten raw or cooked.
The process of sprouting is basically soaking and rinsing seeds to allow for germination which results in the resting seed breaking down and multiplying its nutrient content. Therefore, the nutritional value of a raw nut, seed or grain that has undergone a process of sprouting is deemed to be more nutrient rich and easier to digest.
Sprouted foods are common in a raw food diet and have been sprouting up (no pun intended) in some of our convenience snack foods. One new product on the market is called Simply Sprouted, Way Better Snacks. Simply stated, they are the modern day tortilla chip that can be eaten alone or used for dipping and which have unique ingredients and flavors. Some of the sprouted ingredients include chia seeds, flax seeds, diakon radish seeds, broccoli seeds and quinoa and they come in Multi-Grain, Sweet Potato, Sweet Chili flavors and others.
Make no mistake, this is not a substitute for eating your vegetables but if you are seeking a chip that is different from the rest and that may have some added health benefits, this may be the chip for you.
