Could the Ninth Doctor have another companion besides Rose? To celebrate the 50th anniversary of “Doctor Who”, Penguin Books UK and Puffin Books are releasing e books each month in 2013 featuring one of the eleven Doctors and written by a famous children’s or young adult’s fiction author. For September, Puffin will be releasing “The Beast of Babylon” by Charlie Higson. This installment is a delightful expansion of Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor.
One beautiful day Ali comes across a strange being, or rather two of them, while out with her family. Just when she believed it could not get any stranger, she meets a man in a black leather jacket. After talking to the man, she realizes he is a Time Lord and begs to go with him to find the strange creatures she witnessed before. The hunt takes them back in time on Earth to Babylon when Ali finds herself alone in the TARDIS, trying to mind he Doctor’s wishes. Can she save him from certain death?
The story is well written by Charlie Higson and the plot in expertly weaved to surprise the reader over and over. His ability to engage the reader and play on their assumptions turns this story from an exciting trip in the TARDIS to a very important piece in the “Doctor Who” timeline. Just when you think you know how it is going to end and how it all fits together, Higson shows a bit more of his hand surprising you all of the way through the story.
Charlie Higson is not only a well-known author, he is a bit of a renaissance man. He began writing at ten years old, was the singer in a pop group called “The Higsons”, became a painter and decorator, and then went back into writing. Not only has Higson authored many books including “Double or Die”, “By Royal Command” and “The Enemy Series”, he also spent time as a writer on “Saturday Night Live”.
