The Avengers

As regular readers of this column no doubt recognize, this reviewer has a soft spot for a kick-ass superhero film. And what is better than a movie heralding the extraordinary achievements of one or two costumed warriors? How about when a cohort of superheroes joining forces to save the world? Later this summer, “Guardians of the Galaxy,” a film about a team of superheroes, will be released in theatres. One of the most successful movies of all-time about a team of heroes: “The Avengers.”

The Avengers” was released in 2012, and it brings together the legendary characters from the Marvel universe. They include Iron Man (played by Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (played by Chris Evans), Thor (played by Chris Hemsworth), the Hulk (played by Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (played by Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (played by Jeremy Renner). Their leader, Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson) brings them in to fight Loki (played by Tom Hiddelston), Thor’s black sheep brother from another planet. Determined to prevail, Loki is leading an army that could destroy the earth. Although the superhero team members are united in their determination to undermine Loki and his army, these are all personalities accustomed to running their own shows and conflicts between them emerge and contribute to the movement of the plot.

This is an A list cast of superheroes. Once again Robert Downey Jr. is perfect as Iron Man, aka Tony Stark. He is very smart, but also brash. Chris Evans is equally good as Captain America, aka Steve Rogers, who became a genetically enhanced soldier during World War II. Tony’s inflated self-esteem unnerves the more straight and narrow Steve. Chris Hemsworth is also impressive as Thor, who disapproves of his brother destructive impulses. Despite this, he still has a certain love for him since they are brothers. Mark Ruffalo is very good. We see that Bruce Banner really struggles to keep the Hulk under control.

“The Avengers” features some of the best action scenes of any superhero film. An example is the climax where the heroes battle Loki and his army. The special effects are amazing.

“The Avengers” is one of the best superhero movies of all-time.
