Yes, the restaurant run by award-winning pastry chef Mindy Segal which is nestled in the Bucktown neighborhood on N. Damen, has a delectable selection of hot chocolate as the name suggests. Whether you choose Eggnog, Dark, Medium, Mexican, Black & Tan, Half & Half, or Chai, you’re sure to get a solid taste of the quality of their craft. The Eggnog has a wonderful balance of white chocolate and all the notes of your favorite holiday drink; the Half & Half, which consists of half espresso with half dark hot chocolate, is a rich treat. The best part: all orders are accompanied by a chunk of a homemade marshmallow on a stick.
Although Mindy’s is well known for being a dessert spot, their brunch can stand on its own in terms of its variety. There were a few typical items on the menu such as French Toast and a Farmer’s Market scramble, but there were also unique brunch dishes for the adventurous such as Duck Hash and Posole, a Mexican stew.
Their Quiche Loraine, with Swiss, fresh herbs, and served with a mixed green salad with red wine vinaigrette, was surprisingly light and creamy. The Swiss cheese was evenly dispersed throughout the round quiche and made it fluffy instead of heavy, with a delicious melted portion in the middle.
However, the Pork Chop & Grits was the star of the menu. With cheesy grits, a grilled pork chop, perfectly cooked sunny side egg, and poblano peppers, this was like gourmet dining fused with a southern style breakfast. The only down-side was that the portion was small in comparison to some of the other dishes. It could be that they left you wanting more!
On the way out, a hot chocolate to-go was just the thing for the snowy walk home. Mindy’s Hot Chocolate is a must-add to your brunch list.
