Whether heading to Iowa or from Iowa, the Amish Country Store in Lamoni, Iowa off Interstate 35 is well worth a stop.
This little store which is packed full with odds and ends of novelty items and unusual food products is truly a remarkable place. It is owned and operation by Graceland University and opened in 2009 with racks full of goods produced by local Amish families.
Visitors are able to browse the simple gifts made by men and women who learned traditional crafts from generation to generation. Quilts, aprons, rugs, baskets, furniture, candy, jellies and jams. Each item is lovingly made by the plain community members.
Next to the store is the Maid-Rite restaurant. This franchise started in 1926. Maid-Rites have attracted customers who love the taste of loose meat sandwiches. The Amish theme of the Lamoni Maid-Rite is unique to the location. There is buggy-style seating and tables made of Midwestern hard woods.
Brief history of the Amish
The Amish are a peace-loving people who feel a special call to be 'in the world but not of it." Through their distinctive dress and careful selection of modern technology, they maintain themselves in their own tightly-knit communities to perserve their beliefs and way of life. The family works together and everyone contributes. Instead of striving for fame or riches, the Amish choose to devote their lives quietly to their families and church community.
