This leg of the newest episode of The Amazing Race (originally airing Sunday night Mar. 17, 2013) starts in Bali. Dave and Connor, having won the last leg, start first. They must fly to Hanoi, Vietnam where they must find a location where the next clue will be waiting. Dave says that it has been recommended that he has surgery on his torn Achilles tendon within seven days. They have decided to step down at the end of this leg so he can get surgery. All of the teams are on edge because there is a U-turn ahead on this leg.
As the teams make their way to Vietnam the first flight has three teams (Dave and Connor, Pam and Winnie and Max and Katie) with the remaining teams coming on the later flight. When they land the first three teams scramble to find a cab and make their way to the location of their next clue. They arrive in the middle of the night and the place doesn’t open until 9am the next morning so they are stuck waiting which allows the rest of the teams to catch up. As it turns out Dave and Connor are at the doctor’s instead of the challenge so they aren’t there, but Winnie, Pam, Max and Katie all decide not to tell the rest of the group that Dave and Connor are stepping down.
The next morning at the pit stop Dave and Connor arrive and step down. Dave is brought to tears because he feels like he is letting Connor down. Connor tells Phil that his dad is his hero and he will never let him down. Phil tells them they should hold their heads up and be proud of how they did. Meanwhile, Caroline and Jennifer and Winnie and Pam all agree to U-Turn Mona and Beth or Joey and Meghan if they arrive at the U-Turn first.
When the business opens the teams flood in and get their clue. The roadblock has the racers watch a performance of the Vietnam national pride song. At the end of the performance a few dancers hold up cards with words on them written in Vietnamese. They must remember what those words are, go to another building and match to corresponding poster with those words on it. They race back and forth, coming close, but not getting it. Pam is the first one to get it right for her team. Players start teaming up, hoping to better their odds. Chuck then Jennifer get it and are on their way.
Across town Winnie and Pam arrive where they will do a traditional bamboo dance. Back at the roadblock all the other teams finish up and are on their heels. The bamboo dance has the team members hold hands and step through bamboo poles being moved to music. Pam and Winnie do it with no problem. They move to the next challenge where they will have to choose between two challenges. One allows them to play a game which will give them four chess pieces with symbols on them. They must then find a person wearing a shirt with that symbol on it and place them in the correct spot on a large, human size chess board. The other challenge has them collect a shopping list, go to a market, buy the ingredients then cook two bowls of Pho.
Pam and Winnie both know how to play Chinese Chess so they choose the chess challenge. Back at the bamboo challenge Chuck and Wynona struggle, because they don’t realize they have to hold hands while doing the task while the hockey players, Anthony and Bates, make fun of each other and how soft their hands are.
Max and Katie decide to do the cooking challenge. At first they have a major language barrier issue, but then find a woman who translates for them and helps them out. Pam and Winnie finish up just as the rest of the teams arrive. They must make their way to a B-52 memorial where their next clue will be waiting.
At the B-52 memorial Pam and Winnie arrive first and find a double U-Turn. The U-Turn is anonymous. They U-Turn Meghan and Joey then get the clue which sends them to the next pit stop.
Chuck and Wynona get lost on the way to the market while Max and Katie have a few issues getting the right amounts of the food. Anthony and Bates finish the chess challenge followed by Josh and Meghan. After getting their ingredients correct Max and Katie cook their Pho and are on their way.
Pam and Winnie are the first team to arrive at the pit stop. For coming in first they win a trip to the Whistler resort in Canada.
Josh and Meghan arrive at the B-52 memorial and find that they are U-Turned. They proceed to U-Turn Chuck and Wynona. At the chess challenge teams are struggling to figure out what they have to do then Mona and Beth figure it out and finish it while Jennifer and Caroline are stuck trying to understand the chess game.
At the U-Turn Bates and Anthony arrive and are happy they are not U-Turned so they head to the pit stop. At long last Caroline and Jennifer figure out the chess and finish it. Chuck and Wynona finally find the market and start getting their ingredients. Meghan and Joey, now having to do the cooking challenge, start gathering ingredients while Max and Katie are the second team to arrive at the pit stop followed closely by the Mona and Beth. Bates and Anthony come in fourth.
Meghan and Joey see Chuck and Wynona at the market and have a spark of hope, but they allowed the woman running the shop in the market to just give them a bunch of stuff so they end up missing items, having wrong amounts and they have things they don’t need. Chuck and Wynona see Meghan and Joey with chickens (which Joey wrongly grabbed) and assume they need them so they run back and get chickens.
Caroline and Jennifer arrive at the pit stop and finish fifth.
Chuck and Wynona finish cooking, arrive at the memorial and see that they are U-Turned. They are crushed and feel defeated heading to the chess challenge. Joey and Meghan finish cooking and finish sixth. Meghan vows revenge for being U-Turned. Chuck and Wynona finish the chess challenge then come to the pit stop and come in last. Wynona breaks down and tells Phil she feels like she is the weakest player in the game, but Chuck says he loves her and is proud of her as she cries. Phil tells them that because Dave and Connor had to step down they are not eliminated and they live to race another day. This episode of The Amazing Race ends with Chuck promising to listen to Wynona more and treat her better.
