Back in 2009, the United States bid farewell to the beloved Pontiac brand under the direction of the US Government, in order to restructure General Motors into a more focused state of profitable production. Prior to its demise, the brand had launched one of the best sport sedans ever introduced--well by, General Motors. The Pontiac G8 sport sedan borrowed its overall architecture and dynamics from the company’s Australian cousin from down under, Holden. And now for the 2014 model year, to revisit the spirit of the G8, Chevrolet has now gone back to Australia to design, develop, and manufacture the all-new Chevrolet SS sport sedan. Surprisingly, the SS is also the first rear wheel drive Chevrolet production sedan since the Caprice way back in 1995.
Sporting an entirely new identity from the departed Pontiac G8, the SS takes styling cues from its other Chevrolet siblings with an additional dose of foreign model injections. A prominent bowtie is proudly affixed the front grill is underlined by aggressive styling cues that remain exclusive for this four door muscle car. The rear end also sees a completely different design direction from its ancestor and mate from across the pond, with an equally aggressive rear end that albeit simple, also communicates a contentious language. The test car was painted in silver, and although traditionally dull on others, gives the SS a striking edge to highlight every line and edge of its contentious body.
Power comes from General Motor’s well-known 6.2-liter LS3 V8 aluminum engine shared with company siblings like the Corvette and Camaro. Those who require additional space than the mentioned sports car legends will enjoy the benefits of the LS series powerplant properly dropped in a roomy sport sedan body with little compromise. During the test week, I found myself consistency digging into the accelerator to listen to the roar of the potent V8 that guarantees smiles for miles. Chevrolet claims a 0-60 mph time of just 4.7 seconds, but behind the wheel, the time seems to be a bit conservative.
On the interior, the SS benefits from GM’s new revitalization formula of premium material usage found on the rest of the product portfolio. High line materials contribute to another level of sophistication that wasn’t quite present in prior Pontiac products. The dashboard has a well thought out, and includes a number of innovative technologies including Chevrolet’s new application based system, MyLink. Drivers will also enjoy Alcantara suede inserts and detailed stitching throughout the cabin underlining the performance and luxury focus of the new SS.
The SS nomenclature possesses a strong reputation in the market, and a significant length of history when it comes to muscle machines. It is no doubt why Chevrolet crowned this model with the legendary nameplate. The Chevrolet SS remains a key player in a limited rear wheel drive sport sedan segment that doesn’t offer many options.
