Every year the Chris Vicarro director of the Maryland Skate Commission puts together the Best of Baltimore contest series. The contest is hosted at several different parks and the scores are tallied at all the stops and there is an overall winner in each age group for the whole year. Chris's usual haunts are the Carroll Park located in Pigtown and the Charmcity Skatepark located in Canton. This year Chris chose to include the Laurel Park. Laurel is an outdoor concrete park in Laurel, Maryland. It's a nice park that has a contemporary layout, and is in great shape. The park is also free to get in, but the higher ups who actually run the park charge a park rental fee for contests. They also have a strict no graffiti/sticker policy which contractually punishes the host financially Another problem is trying to handle people coming to skate the park who dont want to enter the contest. A lot of them are not concerned about the contest, they are just coming to skate the park like they do on a normal day. The fact that the host had to pay $500 to rent the park doesn't matter to them. All of these factors make hosting a contest at the Laurel Skatepark very stressful for the host. The perfect storm of all these stressful situations came together at Chris's second stop of the Best of Baltimore series. There were a few shouting matches and some very angry park patrons and parents. Due to all the negativity alot of people were pulling out of that stop. This made Jason Chapman owner of the Charmcity Skatepark question whether or not to host the upcoming Best of Baltimore Series 2012 final. "In the end I decided that I wanted to be there for all the kids who had worked hard at the two earlier stops by going forward and hosting the Best of Baltimore finals" said Jason Chapman.
The finals at the Charmcity Skatepark went on without any problems. It was a great contest, a little mellower then most of the contests at Charm but a great contest none the less.
"Thanks to everyone who came out and had a great time ripping." - Jason Chapman owner The Charmcity Skatepark
