Thai Nakorn Restaurant, Garden Grove, California (CA)

Dorothy and I decided to check out the Thai Nakorn restaurant in Garden Grove. This was a delightful experience. Dorothy normally does not enjoy Thai food, yet this time she did.

Because we got there after 3:00 PM, the lunch specials were over so we ordered dinner specials. Dorothy ordered the Chicken and Shrimp with Bamboo, Mushroom over Rice.

Chicken and Shrimp with Bamboo, Mushroom Over Rice, $9.45

Despite being very mild, Dorothy's dish had delicious flavor. The chicken was tender and the vegetables were al dente. One of the nice features of the typical Asian meal is that the vegetables aren’t overcooked so they retain their flavor.

Beef Panang Curry, $9.45

When I explained that I like curry and have had the red curry at their other restaurant in Stanton, John recommended the Beef Panang Curry. He told me that it is very popular. It was an excellent recommendation. We both loved it.

The curry was sweet and only slightly spicy. It was mild enough that Dorothy liked the flavor too. We both loved the beef. I was amazed at how large the pieces of roast beef were. It reminded me of pot roast. The meat was so tender, I pulled it apart easily with a fork.

Shrimp Fried Rice, $9.75

Instead of ordering just steamed rice to go with my curry, I ordered the Shrimp Fried Rice. We were delighted with how many shrimp were in this dish. While fried rice by definition has fried egg in it, in so many places, the egg isn’t really obvious. Thai Nakorn’s fried rice had obvious pieces of fried egg, which we liked.

We were impressed with the portion sizes and the wonderful flavor of all three dishes.

Coconut Custard, $6.50

For dessert, we selected the coconut custard for $6.50. We actually took this with us and had it later when we ate our left overs. The custard was marvelous with excellent coconut flavor. The cute touch was that Thai Nakorn served it in a coconut shell.

The only disappointment was that they don’t have American-style fresh brewed black iced tea. I had their Jasmine Tea instead. They did have Thai Iced Tea, but it is sweetened and has milk in it. They also serve coconut milk.

Our server, John, gave pleasant, helpful service. As to atmosphere, the Thai Nakorn Restaurant was very spacious with attractive, comfortable seating. The folks at Thai Nakorn decorated tastefully with Thai artwork. They also had a banquet room for those wanting a private meeting. We’ll be back.
